Renting With a Dog in Dallas
On October 28, 2026 we read the websites of 162 DFW area apartment buildings. 111 of them post their pet rules clearly. Of those, 35 post no breed list, 59 post breed limits, and 39 say they have no weight limit.
What buildings usually ask
- A breed list. Many buildings list breeds they do not accept. Some apply the list to mixed breeds too.
- A weight limit. Common in older buildings and some suburban communities.
- A pet limit. Often two pets per apartment.
- Pet rent and a pet fee. A monthly pet rent plus a one time fee or deposit.
- Records. Vaccine records and a photo, sometimes a pet screening profile.
Assistance animals
Assistance animals are not pets under fair housing law, and pet rent and pet fees generally do not apply to them. The rules on documentation have changed recently, so ask the building how it handles requests.
